Stefan has advised lenders and companies across sub-Saharan Africa for over 14 years on a range of complex restructuring and re-organization matters across all sectors from mining to entertainment and media.
Prior to joining Kroll, Stefan served as Partner and Africa Leader for the Turnaround & Restructuring Strategy practice at Ernst & Young Parthenon. Whilst in this role, Stefan was the business rescue practitioner for Ster Kinekor Theatres (the largest cinema chain in South Africa), where he stabilized the business during its COVID-19-induced crisis, raising new capital from “special situation” funds in South Africa and the UK to exit rescue. He is also the Official Receiver of Mayfair Holdings and Mayfair Speculations and served as Trustee for matters for the competition commission. Stefan has been a lead advisor to numerous banks and financial institutions in South Africa around distressed exposures in their portfolios.
Prior to this Stefan set up the specialist restructuring practice at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) South Africa and developed this practice over 10 years. During this time, he was a member of the executive restructuring team of African Bank in Curatorship providing specialist advice to the Curator and stakeholders, including South African banks and the South African Reserve Bank. Before PwC, Stefan was the founder and managing director of Total Accident Management Limited (in the UK).
Stefan has had experience in holding statutory/officer holder roles for Ster Kinekor Theatres, Aerospace Development Corporation, Mayfair Holdings and Mayfair Speculations, Limpopo Iron Ore. Limited, Omaruru Minerals Limited and numerous other companies.
Stefan is a member of the South African Restructuring and Insolvency Practitioners Association (SARIPA), which is a part of INSOL. He is also a member of the South African Turnaround Managers Association (TMA) and is a CIPC Registered Senior Business Rescue Practitioner. He is a regular speaker at restructuring seminars and events both locally and internationally.
